Run-of-River Hydroelectric Projects

Hydropower generates about 24 percent of the world’s electricity. Canada is one of the world’s largest producers of hydroelectricity, generating 370 billion KWh from the source in 2008. Canada was once the world’s largest hydroelectricity producer, but China has overtaken this position in the last few years. Quebec’s La Grande hydroelectric facility is one of the world’s largest , with an installed capacity of 15,000 MW. Quebec has the largest share of Canada’s hydroelectric production, followed by British Columbia.

World's Top Hydroelectricity Producers 2008

More than 70,000 MW of hydropower have been developed in Canada. Approximately 475 hydroelectric generating plants across the country produce an average of 355 trillion kilowatt hours per year - or enough electricity to heat and power the equivalent of 14 million homes.

Canada still has immense undeveloped potential – over twice the current capacity – and all provinces and territories have some hydropower potential.
